Boozy, citrusy and colorful this Blood Orange Gin and Tonic Cocktail recipe is a fun and fresh twist on the traditional gin and tonic!
I’ve been on a big citrus kick recently and I’m blaming it on the weather! We’ve had a few days of warm sunny weather followed by a chilly winter mix and all of this weather whiplash has me wishing for spring and much warmer temps. I might be a bit partial but the best way to enjoy citrus is in a cocktail!
My favorite late winter or early spring citrus is hands down the blood orange, it has a short season but they are totally worth hunting down. They are citrusy-sweet and vibrantly colored to make even the dreariest of days feel brighter. Blood oranges are usually available from December to April but depending on the weather that could change by a month or so either way. Most well stocked grocery stores have them on hand during the season but if blood oranges aren’t available, your favorite variety of orange will work as a great alternative. It just might not be as brightly colored.
This cocktail starts with some fresh squeezed blood orange and lime juice. Add your favorite gin, a few dashes of orange bitters and top it all off with some tonic. The orange bitters help to bring out the citrus flavor of the blood orange and give a complex, slightly bitter flavor to the cocktail that I really like. It’s light, fresh and the perfect thing to get you through to spring! Happy cocktail-ing!
