I never used to like turmeric but in the last few years with it all over the news being touted as a miracle ingredient that could solve all your problems, I figured I should give it another try. I’m glad I did because this chilled drink is my new favorite way to enjoy the bright golden hue and earthy flavor.
‘Miracle ingredient’ may be a bit of a stretch, but yes turmeric is a pretty awesome spice. Fresh or powdered, turmeric is a common ingredient in curries and can be grated or juiced to make a vibrant colored tonic. Just be careful, turmeric is also used as a dye and will stain your hands and just about anything else it comes into contact with. So, gloves are recommended for this recipe.
Turmeric root is a weird looking ingredient. But, break it open and it reveals a bright golden-orange color. To use it, wash it well to remove any dirt then use a spoon to remove the thin, papery peel and grate it on a microplane or the smallest holes on a box grater.
The balance of the earthy ginger and turmeric and the fresh lemon, all blended together with almond and coconut milk makes for a creamy, slightly sweet iced latte. (Yeah, latte is a stretch but at least I’m not calling it a miracle in a cup!) Cheers to your health!
I went with a blend of almond milk and a bit of coconut milk to give it just the right creaminess but you can skip the coconut milk altogether if you want. Just don’t overdo it on the coconut milk as the high fat content tends to separate out when chilled.
